NIA Pampanga-Bataan IMO, represented by Engr. Alexius S. Academia, Acting Chief of Porac Gumain River Irrigation Systems (PGRIS), held a coordination meeting with FAEGER Co. Ltd. on September 25, 2024 in Floridablanca, Pampanga to explore the potential of generating carbon credits. This can be attained through the implementation of Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) practices to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from paddy fields.
The meeting highlighted the environmental and economic benefits of AWD for farmers. By utilizing this water-saving technology, farmers can help mitigate climate change while also gaining additional income through carbon credits. Additionally, AWD can increase rice production yields by improving water efficiency and crop health.
The discussion centered on the search for suitable sites for AWD implementation, aiming to maximize the program’s impact. The purpose of this exploration is to assess whether AWD could be a viable option for the region and potentially open up opportunities for future partnerships.
