NIA ZAMBALES ENSURES READINESS OF IRRIGATION STRUCTURES AHEAD OF TROPICAL STORM KRISTINE

In anticipation of Tropical Storm Kristine, the NIA Zambales IMO under the leadership of Engr. Enrique G. Carlos, conducted a thorough inspection of key irrigation structures, through its Operations & Maintenance Section field personnel, led by Acting Chief Engr. Tito M. Lacanlale. The inspection focused on the intakes of four major national irrigation systems in the province: Bucao River Irrigation System, Upper Bagsit River Irrigation System, Sto. Tomas River Irrigation System, and Nayom-Bayto River Irrigation System. This proactive measure aims to ensure the irrigation facilities are fully prepared to withstand the storm's impact and safeguard the surrounding agricultural communities.

As part of the safety protocols for inclement weather, several critical measures are implemented. The sluice gates of dams within the irrigation systems are kept open, while intake gates are securely closed to prevent potential flooding. Additionally, hourly monitoring and reporting of the status of dams and intakes is strictly observed to ensure that any issues are promptly addressed.

These efforts reflect NIA’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of the irrigation systems while protecting farmers and their livelihoods during extreme weather conditions.
