The 990,37 Million Bulo Small Reservoir Irrigation Project located in Barangay Kalawakan, Municipality of Dona Remedios Trinidad, Bulacan was broken its ground on April 30, 2018 by selected officials from Local Government Units and other government agencies.
The groundbreaking ceremony was led by the National Irrigation Administration Administrator, Gen Ricardo R Visaya (Ret) as Guest of Honor and the Guest Speaker of the occasion was the mother of the 3rd District of Bulacan, Honorable Congresswoman Lorna C. Silverio.
Hundreds of farmers from Barangays Kalawakan and Malibay, Municipalities of Dona Remedios Trinidad and San Miguel also attended the occasion with overflowing joy and hope for the good future brought by the construction of Bulo Dam.
Historically, the Bulo Dam was constructed by the Department of Public Works and Highways in 1991 as flood mitigating project, but in 2011 the rushing floodwater brought by heavy rains of Typhoons Pedring and Quiel washed out entire structure that causes loss of property in 20 affected barangays of San Miguel.
The reconstruction of the Bulo earthfill dam with irrigation component was commissioned to National Irrigation Administration under its Small Reservoir Irrigation Project (SRIP) sector.
The project is designed to irrigate 570 has. of farmlands; 35 ha. from Bgy. Kalawakan, DRT and 535 in Bgy. Malibay, San Miguel.
The objective of the project is to serve as catch basin of rain water during rainy season thereby mitigating flooding downstream; to increase agricultural production of the benefited area; to introduce and launched fishing industry using the dam’s reservoir area and to generate additional job opportunities to the localities during its construction.
